Dehumidifier Keeps Shutting Off

dehumidifier keeps shutting off

Dehumidifier keeps shutting off. Dehumidifiers keep your home’s humidity level low by removing excessive moisture from the air.

The dehumidifiers are a must-have item, especially in the summer when the humidity level is high, as excessive moisture causes mold build-up, producing dust mites, and you can have allergies.

You plugged in the dehumidifier, and it keeps turning off. It’s frustrating, Isn’t it? Of course, nobody can afford a deceptive product, especially when it is needed.

The good news is that you can easily solve the issue at your end. In this article, we’ll troubleshoot the problems causing your dehumidifier to turn off time by time.

Dehumidifier Keeps Shutting Off

There are several reasons behind your dehumidifier shutting off frequently. We’ll discuss them one by one and what to do about them.

The Filter Is Blocked

A dehumidifier sucks the air into it. The air passing by it passes through the filter, which removes the pollutants from the air.

After some time, air filters get dirty, and it is hard for air to pass through, making the compressor work harder and consuming more electric power.

It’s recommended to clean the filter every week and replace the entire filter every 12 months.

Guide to clean dehumidifier filter

The filter is located mostly on the back side of the dehumidifier. You can refer to the manual for help. Once found, follow these steps:

  1. Pull and take the filter out.
  2. Use your fingers to take off the dust.
  3. Then put the filter under tap water, put soap on the brush and gently rub it on the filter.
  4. Continue scrubbing for 3 minutes and turn the filter back side and scrub the other side of the filter.
  5. Wash the filter with warm water and leave it to dry.

The Coils are Clogged

dirty dehumidifier coils

Dehumidifiers have a hot and cold coil. The cold coil condenses the water and removes it from the air while a hot coil warms the water to make it dry. Then cold and dry air is blown out of the dehumidifier.

Over time, moisture in the air causes the coils to get clogged. When the coils get clogged, the air passage is blocked. As a result, the airflow is reduced.

So, you have to clean the coils to let the air flow properly. Follow these steps:

  1. Take vinegar and warm water. Mix them.
  2. Use a flashlight to see how much the frost is built inside the coil.
  3. Close the coil’s one end and pour the mixture into the coil.
  4. Take warm water and rinse the coils in it.
  5. See if the coil is cleared inside. If yes, let them dry before fitting them back.

Humidity Sensor Issue

The humidity sensor works to detect the humidity level in the air, and it is attached to the compressor. The compressor gets turned ON when the humidity level falls within the set range.

If the sensor is faulty or dirty or there is a fault, the compressor will not work properly, and you’ll assume that dehumidifier is shut off.

In this case, there is nothing you can do except call the professional for help.
